Maria Murphy, a Year Six pupil at St Peter’s School in Scarborough, completed the ‘Walk for Life’ on Sunday 25th March, an annual event in Scarborough held specifically for fundraising, and realised over £1,000 for the Lourdes Sick Fund - Coastal Region.
The bulk of the money came from the parishioners of St Edward’s, St George’s and St Peter’s Churches after Maria was invited to make an appeal after each of the Sunday Masses. The generosity of the people was overwhelming and Maria would like to publicly thank everyone for the tremendous response to her appeals, and to Fr Paul Dowling and Fr Tom O’Connell for their support in allowing her to speak. One visitor from London was so impressed with Maria’s appeal that he took her address and sent her a cheque for £50. Another parishioner from St George’s parish has pledged £100 which is still to be added to the £1,000 already collected.
Maria is seen here presenting a cheque for £1,000 to Mrs Helen Grierson, also from Scarborough, who will be travelling with the Lourdes Pilgrimage for the first time this year as a nurse. Mrs Grierson was delighted to receive the cheque on behalf of the Lourdes Committee and is very much looking forward to being part of this year’s Pilgrimage. Maria herself is already a seasoned pilgrim and a member of the Lourdes Music Group; she will be travelling for the eighth time this year.
